Discernment represents a true powerful connection to God. For that reason, I find myself always praying for discernment. It is always top of mind as I know and truly understand the power it represents, especially as a connection to our Lord and Savior.
Grab your Bible, let’s read the Word
In Psalms, it says the following:
“I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes.” (Psalms 119:125 NIV)
It is in that understanding that we gain true knowledge of God’s teachings through his Word.
What is Discernment?
Discernment is a gift from the Holy Spirit. It provides the ability to see and understand a deeper purpose or moral choice. It allows us to distinguish between what’s true and what’s false. That becomes a means of protection for us as believers in Christ.
Why is Discernment Important?
Having the gift of spiritual insight is deeply rooted in God’s love and the power of the Holy Spirit.
“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” (1Corinthians 2:14 NIV)
Spiritual awareness helps us to make good decisions based on Biblical principles.j
“Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands.” (Psalms 119:66 NIV)
“All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse. To the discerning all of them are right; they are upright to those who have found knowledge. Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Proverbs 8:8-11 NIV)
Discernment Brings About Understanding
By having the gift of discernment, God is giving us immense knowledge to truly understand his words and instructions for our lives. That’s true power. However, discernment is not just about discerning what is good. It goes beyond that to discerning what is best.
“Who is wise? Let them realize these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.” Hosea 14:9 NIV)
Understanding is the key; discernment brings about understanding of God’s instructions. It goes beyond what we can actually see and hear.
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be throughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:14-16 NIV)
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. (James 3:14 NIV)
Pray for God’s Guidance
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5 NIV)
Tap into the power of God; pray for discernment and get the connection that allows you to know and to understand the way in which you should go.
”And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,” (Philippians 1:9 NIV)
